Mobile network EE has announced that it will provide a high speed wifi service across the entire Chiltern Railways network by the end of 2016. The service will be provided onboard trains and will not lose it’s connection when it passes through a tunnel or other areas which are usually plagued by wifi blackspots.
EE is making the blackspot-free wifi possible by setting up a wireless trackside network by December this year. Currently, Chiltern Railways service covers 65 stations including London, Birmingham and Aylesbury and is used by thousands of customers each week.
Should the network prove to be successful, the parent company of Chiltern Railways, Arriva will use the service across other areas of business including its Northern Rail network.
The Commercial Director for Chiltern Railways said that the operator was one of the first railway service providers to introduce onboard wifi a few years ago on its London to Birmingham trains. Since then, the company has invested heavily in 4G infrastructure, but the service was limited in some places due to blackspots. He said that it was ‘always’ the vision of the company to deliver ‘truly connected’ mobility and promised that thanks to the EE partnership, Chiltern Railways would now have the fastest and most reliable wifi in the UK.
